KGF Chapter 2 opened to $14.60 million (Rs. 111 crores) overseas. After Baahubali 2 ($22.50 million) and RRR ($16.50 million), this is the third biggest Indian opening weekend. RRR had a lopsided opening in the US, whereas KGF 2 opened to nearly $11 million worldwide. Early Sunday reports a Rs. 442 crores weekend in India, which when combined with these offshore numbers gives a worldwide opening of Rs. 553 crores in four days, second only to Baahubali 2, which earned Rs. 617 crores in four days.
We estimated the weekend at $13.50 million yesterday, but the film’s debut weekend in the Middle East surpassed even our most optimistic estimates, grossing over $4 million. The Yash starrer defeated Aladdin to the greatest opening ever in UAE during Ramdan with $2.60 million. It was the third biggest Indian movie opener in the UAE, after Baahubali 2 and Sultan.
Easter breaks aided several markets, and some, like Australia, will extend through Tuesday, boosting weekday numbers. North America remained the biggest market at $4.65 million, up $1.75 million from Thursday. Australia came second with about $1.50 million and Malaysia with over $1 million.
The Hindi version of the film made around $5.50 million during the weekend, placing it among the top twenty-five greatest Hindi openers ever. Because the Hindi version is so important, the legs may be better than normal for a South Indian film, bringing the total to closer to $30 million.
