The police say that three people were hurt when a gunshot went off at Six Flags Great America near Chicago on Sunday. No one died or got hurt badly as a result of what happened.
Around 8 p.m., 911 calls were made to the theme park in Gurnee, Illinois, which is about 45 miles north of Chicago. This was said by the Gurnee (Ill.) Police Department in a statement posted on its social media accounts.
Police are still looking into what happened, but from what they know so far, a white sedan drove into the parking lot and parked near the entrance to the park. Then, several people got out and started shooting at a second person.
“The gunshot… did not seem to be a random act. It seemed to be a targeted crime that happened outside the park,” the police said in a statement posted on Facebook.
The statement says that a 17-year-old girl from Aurora, Illinois with a leg wound and a 19-year-old woman from Appleton, Wisconsin with a thigh wound were both taken to a nearby hospital. Their wounds were not life-threatening. The third person who was hurt did not want to go to the hospital.
Six Flags Great America said in a statement that Gurnee police and park security were there right away. Even though the incident happened outside the park, which closes at 8 p.m., the remaining visitors stayed inside for a short time for safety reasons. After the gunshot and 911 call, they were taken out.
WGN Chicago got a statement from Six Flags, which says: “Safety and security are the most important things to Six Flags in terms of time, skill, and money. Inside and outside the park, there are many layers of safety measures in place to protect visitors and staff. We are always looking at and improving our protocol to make sure it is as safe as possible.
“We have cameras in the parking lot and the park, as well as advanced screening technology, uniformed and unclothed patrols all over the property, and uniformed and unclothed patrols in the park. All of these things allow us to act quickly and give important information. The Gurnee Police Department has joined the park’s security team because they have a substation there.
Illinois Six Flags is a park on 300 acres with 17 roller coasters and three areas for kids. Gurnee is about 15 miles north of Chicago’s Highland Park, where a gunman opened fire on a Fourth of July parade and killed seven people.
