Boris Johnson, the prime minister of the UK, is rumoured to be leaving his job after a lot of drama and ministers quitting. Johnson and more than 50 of his ministers turned against him. This nearly shut down the government. Reports said that in the last two hours, eight ministers, including two secretaries of state, quit, leaving Johnson alone and powerless.
Chris Mason, the BBC’s political editor, said, “Boris Johnson will step down today.” After more than 40 cabinet ministers quit, Boris Johnson did the same. It wasn’t clear if he would stay in office while the Conservative Party chose a new leader or who would take his place as prime minister. Downing Street said that Boris Johnson will stay as PM until a new Tory leader is chosen.
Johnson was fired after he fought for his job for days. Johnson, who is 58 years old, won a big majority in 2019 and became Prime Minister. He did this by getting votes from parts of Britain that had never voted for his Conservative Party before. Even his new minister of finance, Nadhim Zahawi, told him to leave.
Zahawi didn’t quit, but he said that he and other cabinet members went to Downing Street to tell Johnson to “leave with dignity.” “It breaks my heart that he hasn’t listened and is ruining the good work of this government,” Zahawi wrote. “The government must be trustworthy and stable. You know what to do, Prime Minister. Go.”
Keir Starmer, the head of the opposition, declared that Boris Johnson resigning would be best for the nation. It ought to have happened sooner. He was never good enough. He is the source of a lot of lies, scandals, and fraud.”
