On Wednesday, the Dallas Cowboys and linebacker Anthony Barr, who has been playing for a long time, reached a deal that will last for one year. There were a couple of months of talks between the two sides.
Micah Parsons will continue to do a lot of different things for the Cowboys in 2022. He will have responsibilities as both a linebacker and a pass-rusher. Because of this, the team wanted to add a veteran linebacker to play with Leighton Vander Esch. At the moment, there is no other linebacker with as much experience as Vander Esch.
The Cowboys’ second-year linebacker Jabril Cox tore his anterior cruciate ligament and is now ready to play again. Even though he hasn’t been at work for the past two days, it doesn’t look like anyone is worried about what’s going on.
Barr has been chosen for the Pro Bowl four times. Last season, he had three interceptions, 2.5 sacks, and 72 tackles, which was a career high. This was his third-best number in his eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, where he has spent his entire professional career.
The linebacker, who was 30 at the time, missed the first four games of the 2021 season because he had surgery on his right knee. However, he ended up playing in 11 of the season’s games.
He changed his contract in March of this year so that he could be a free agent after the 2021 season. Because Barr tore his pectoral muscle in the game against Indianapolis, his pay and bonuses were cut from $12.9 million to $10 million, with a base salary of $9.4 million that was fully guaranteed. Barr had to miss the last 14 games of the 2020 season because of this.
Barr and Cowboys senior defensive assistant George Edwards used to work together in Minnesota, so they already know each other.
The Vikings picked him first overall in 2014, when Mike Zimmer was their head coach. He was a star at UCLA (ninth overall). Barr played outside linebacker in college for a 3-4 defence, but in Zimmer’s 4-3 defence, he has a role that isn’t typical for someone in that position. In this position, he is put in charge of blitzes that are planned around the skills he has. Pro Football Focus says that Barr was the 12th best pass rusher at his position and the 14th best in coverage at the end of the season.
Barr was an important part of calling defensive plays for Minnesota and wore the green dot on his helmet for most of his time there. He was also very important to the field.
When Barr became eligible for free agency for the last time in 2019, the linebacker verbally agreed to a deal with the New York Jets that would have paid him $15 million per season for five years. But less than 24 hours later, he went back to the Vikings and signed a much lower-paying contract with them.
He has made 495 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, and 5 interceptions over the course of eight seasons.
